About

Meteorologist Brooks Garner, AMS/NWA

Veteran TV meteorologist

Watch me today: Weekday evening meteorologist at FOX 35 Orlando.

Experience: I’ve worked in TV weather for two decades and during this time have won a Murrow, several Emmy’s and an AP Award. I’ve worked in big market TV since 2010. Recently I was featured in Philadelphia Magazine. Not only have I been sourced as an expert domestically, but internationally for the BBC and LBC. I was published in the industry-standard AMS BAMS magazine. I also had a cameo in a Hollywood film. (My Own Love Song, 2010). I’m also a college-trained graphic designer at the Massachusetts College of Art, where I received my BFA.

Philosophy: In the early 2000s, I was hired out of college to produce weather graphics at WHDH (Sunbeam) in Boston. It was thrive or die environment with a lightning-paced, high-expectation, zero-fail culture. I thrived and have brought that work ethic to every TV contract since.

Previous stations: DENVER, 2019-2021 at KDVR (FOX 31), weekday mornings… HOUSTON, 2013-2019 at KHOU, weekdays Noon & 4pm… TAMPA, 2010-2013 at WFLA, weekend evenings… COLUMBIA, SC, 2005-2010 at WIS, weekday evenings… SIOUX CITY, IA, 2004 at KMEG, weekday mornings… BOSTON, 2003-2004 at WHDH, weekday morning weather producer.

Weather Seals: AMS (American Meteorological Society) and the NWA (National Weather Association).

Education: Post-graduate work includes completing a three-year Certification Program at Mississippi State University for Broadcast Meteorology and Geosciences. Bachelor degree (BFA) from the Massachusetts College of Art, majoring in Film and Video, with 2 additional years in Graphic Design.

Notable experiences: After learning so much from Hurricane Harvey in 2017 while in Houston, I immediately recognized the historic flooding threat from 2022’s Hurricane Ian in Orlando . The system ultimately ranked #2 in US history for, “largest distribution of 10”+ of rain across a geographical area.”

When I worked at WFLA in Tampa, I had the chance each week to fly in the station’s helicopter, reporting weather from the sky. In one memorable event, we happened upon a police chase and it became breaking news, followed the suspect from Tampa to Orlando, (where I would work a decade later), with several other news and police choppers in the sky.

Here's a quick behind the scenes look at news coverage of a police chase today over I-4 between Lakeland and Orlando. Several other news/police chopper in cl...

Awards:

Awards/Notables: My latest Emmy win was in 2021 while in Denver by the Heartland Chapter for , “Best Morning Newscast”. I was named, "Best Meteorologist in Houston" in 2016 by Houston Press newspaper. I have a Suncoast regional Emmy for Hurricane Season: A Special Report in 2012 and was the host of the 2013 Suncoast Emmy-winning production of Hunting Hurricane Sandy. Other Emmy contributions include the 2015 Lone Star Emmy winning production of, Hurricanes, Who Knows Best. My coverage of the Tax Day Floods contributed to a 2017 AP award for KHOU in the 'spot news' category. I also won an AP Award in 2013 for Best Public Affairs' for his work in that year's hurricane-themed TV special.

The biggest award for me is being able to serve viewers and actually help people, by providing potentially life-saving information.

Weather Consulting: While I did act in a feature film playing a weatherman in, "My Own Love Song" (2010), I provided off-screen forecast consulting for the film and for, "Death Sentence" (2007) and, "Accidental Love" (2015) and have worked in various podcast endeavors.

Where From: Born in coastal Georgia, grew up in southern New England.

Outside of Work: I bicycled clear across the US one summer back in the ’90s with a small group of peers. It took us 7 weeks heading west from VA Beach against the wind and mostly uphill. The road ended in Santa Monica. I carried 60 pounds of gear over 100 miles per day, camping at night. I turned 16 on the trip and learned at an early age about the power of team, motivation and finishing what I started. It was a foundation extending to every facet of my career, life and family.
